THE LAND OF SUNRISE: WELCOME TO DIGHA
 
The Southern West Bengal is endowed with the most famous beach on the eastern coast of India - Digha. It is a popular beach resort situated close to the border of Orissa on the Bay of Bengal. The beach town is famous all over for flat, hard beaches. Digha beach is girdled with casuarina plantations along the coast. The sea is calm and shallow for about a mile from the beach. The beach is however facing the problem of sea erosion.
Digha is a small town and crowded with hotels generally around one main road. Its proximity to Kolkata (187 km) attracts the tourists throughout the year. One can view both sunrise and sunset at Digha sea beach. The main attraction is River Hoogly merges into Bay of Bengal over here. Digha offers every possible attraction for a sea-loving travelers: good surf and golden sands.

HISTORY:
Digha is originally known as Beerkul and popularly known as the "Brighton of the East" in one of Warren Hasting's letters (1780 AD) to his wife. In 1923, an English tourist John Frank Smith was charmed by the beauty of Digha and started living here. His writings about Digha slowly gave exposure to this place. After independence, he convinced West Bengal's Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Ch. Roy to develop Digha as a beach resort.
